The 4th of July has always been one of my favorite holidays. While I'm not one to complain, I have a feeling it's not going to be as fun this year.
I had hoped to visit Mom's friend Tiffany in Fresno as consumer fireworks are legal there. Tiffany also enjoys lighting them with her family and says we are more than welcome to use them at her place. Yet the recent fuel prices are making it hard to justify such a trip. A 320-mile round trip to Fresno seems rather silly when the cost of the gas would exceed that of the fireworks!
That said, I did buy several bags of party poppers at Target about two weeks ago. Party poppers and bang snaps aren't considered true fireworks and so are legal in most areas. They don't have the "wow" factor but are better than no fireworks at all.
The other thing is that my cousin Anne is getting married in Taiwan in eight days. I'm extremely happy for Anne, especially considering she is my first maternal cousin to tie the knot. The bad news is that I'll be taking Physics 7C at Berkeley and won't be able to attend the wedding in person.
Although it's not like I can't take a few days off, this is pretty risky given the pace of the class. The fact that plane tickets to Taiwan are sky high right now doesn't help the issue. It's a bittersweet situation, but I'll do my best to be there in spirit. :-)
