a change of plans

I mentioned in earlier posts that I was heading to UC Riverside in late September. However, life doesn't always work out the way we want it to. Given our current financial situation, I'm canceling my plans to study at UC Riverside until further notice. It was an incredibly difficult decision, but I felt it was the right one.

On the other hand, two UC Santa Cruz professors have shown an interest in having me as an intern. The discussions with them are looking promising so far. I guess we'll see how things turn out.

car burglars FTL

I've got more bad news: someone apparently broke into our SUV and made off with three pairs of prescription glasses. They were worth over $1,000 in total. :-(

So we were in San Francisco on Wednesday evening for a make-up class. The next morning, Dad couldn't find his sunglasses. At first we thought he merely misplaced them - until we noticed that two other pairs of glasses were gone as well. There were also signs that someone had rummaged through our belongings. On the bright side, they didn't take anything else. Thank heaven for small favors.

I'm not sure how those crooks got inside, but my guess is that the doors were left unlocked. In any case, I've reported the incident to the San Francisco Police Department and they catch the culprits soon. Fuck car burglars. >:(

new ThinkPad X301

I just finished setting up my new Lenovo laptop. The ThinkPad X301 has a 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM and a 128 GB solid-state drive. It's also pretty light for its size. The list price was almost $3,000 for the base configuration, but Dad got it for about $1,500 after discounts. What a steal!

To be honest, this laptop wasn't something I really needed. Although I had suggested canceling the order in light of my father's unemployment, he insisted that the notebook would be useful. In any case, getting a new computer is always exciting. :-)

the latest victim of the economy...

Dad just told us that he lost his job. :-(

From what I've heard, the local office was closed with absolutely no warning. That means everyone who worked there was essentially laid off. I'm not sure of the reason of the closure, but the economic recession was likely a factor.

On the other hand, this could be a blessing in disguise. According to my father, his job was stressful because of office politics. The good news is that he doesn't have to deal with that crap anymore. They say every cloud has a silver lining. So true.

Regardless of what happens next, here's to hoping Dad will get a new and better job soon!
